Where Do They Make Carhartt?
Some of it is. Most of it isn’t. Carhartt is one of the most recognized workwear brands in America, founded in Detroit in 1889, and still headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan — but most of what they sell today is made in Mexico, Vietnam, and China.
The company operates three manufacturing facilities in Kentucky and Tennessee that produce a specific Made in USA line. Those products are real, verifiable, and union-made. They represent only a fraction of Carhartt’s total output — by Carhartt’s own account, less than 2% of apparel sold in the US is made domestically across the entire industry, and Carhartt’s domestic production outpaces that percentage. But the vast majority of Carhartt items on shelves at your local hardware store are imported.
What Is Made in the USA
Carhartt’s US-made products come from factories in Kentucky — where two facilities produce the iconic duck canvas dungarees — and Camden, Tennessee, where a third facility produces jackets and coats. The workers at these facilities are union-represented.
The specific products most consistently available in the Made in USA line include:
Crafted Series Heavyweight Fleece Crewneck Sweatshirt – heavyweight fleece sweatshirt with raglan sleeves. Check prices at Carhartt.
Duck Active Jacket (J140) — 12-ounce cotton duck canvas, made in Kentucky or Tennessee. One of Carhartt’s most iconic products and one of the few that has stayed domestic. Some production may have shifted to Indonesia, so still not made in China. Check prices on Amazon.
Duck Double Front Work Dungaree (B01) — the work pant that built Carhartt’s reputation. Made in Kentucky. Check prices on Amazon.
Acrylic Watch Hat (A18) — the knit beanie that became a streetwear staple. Made in the USA (except for the Carhartt Work in Progress (“WIP”) and certain colors.
Carhartt marks these products with a Made in USA logo on their website and on the garment label. The inner collar tag is the controlling document — if it doesn’t say Made in USA, it wasn’t made here.
What's Made Overseas
The majority of Carhartt’s catalog — hoodies, t-shirts, flannel shirts, rain defender jackets, cargo pants, and most accessories — is made in Mexico, Vietnam, or China. Mexico is Carhartt’s largest manufacturing hub outside the US. Technical outdoor gear and performance apparel are primarily produced in Vietnam. Bags, accessories, and some clothing lines come from China.
Carhartt doesn’t hide this. Their own history page acknowledges that most apparel sold in the US is imported and positions their domestic manufacturing as a deliberate investment rather than the norm.
How to Check Before You Buy
The inner collar tag states the country of origin. On pants, the tag is on the waistband. This is the controlling document — not the shelf tag, not the retailer listing.
On Carhartt’s website, Made in USA products are marked with a logo in the product listing. However, some products returned in a “Made in USA” search are labeled “imported” — meaning the search includes products with some domestic components but foreign assembly. Look specifically for the Made in USA logo on the product image, not just the search result.
At retail stores, the tag is the only reliable source. Check it before purchasing if origin matters.
Alternatives for All-American Workwear
Round House — bib overalls and work pants made in Shawnee, Oklahoma since 1903. The closest domestic alternative to Carhartt’s dungaree line.
Key Industries — work pants and overalls made in the USA. Long history in domestic workwear manufacturing.
Duluth Trading Company — some products made in the USA, though not all. Check individual items.
Darn Tough — not workwear, but if you’re outfitting for a job site, their merino wool socks are made in Northfield, Vermont with a lifetime warranty.
Carhartt’s Made in USA line is genuine and worth buying if you can find the specific items. For buyers who want their entire workwear purchase to be domestic, the alternatives above fill the gap.
