Denmark - and Other Countries
The short answer: LEGO is a Danish-owned, family-owned company — but the bricks sold in the United States are manufactured in Mexico, not Denmark (but not China). LEGO also operates a factory in China that supplies Asian markets. Where your set was made depends on where you buy it. See more toys not made in China at our page Toys Not Made in China.

About the Brand
The LEGO Group was founded in Billund, Denmark in 1932 by Ole Kirk Christiansen. It remains a privately held, family-owned company to this day. The name comes from the Danish phrase leg godt — “play well.” LEGO is headquartered in Billund and conducts its primary design and development work there.
Ownership is Danish. Manufacturing is global.
Where LEGO Bricks Are Made
LEGO currently operates six factories worldwide, in Denmark, Hungary, Czechia, Mexico, China, and Vietnam — the Vietnam factory opened in April 2025. A seventh factory is under construction in Chesterfield County, Virginia, with production expected to begin in 2027.
LEGO assigns factories to regional markets rather than selling a single globally sourced product. That means the origin of your specific set depends on where you purchase it.
For U.S. buyers: Sets sold in North America are primarily sourced from LEGO’s factory in Monterrey, Mexico. Monterrey is LEGO’s largest manufacturing facility in the world, employing more than 5,000 people, and handles the full manufacturing process — molding, decoration, and packaging.
For Asia-Pacific buyers: The Jiaxing, China factory opened in 2016 to serve growing demand in Asia and handles molding, printing, and packing using the same technology and quality standards as LEGO’s European facilities.
For European buyers: Sets are sourced from the Denmark, Hungary, and Czechia factories.
What This Means for U.S. Shoppers
If you’re buying LEGO sets in the United States and your goal is to avoid Chinese-manufactured products, LEGO is a reasonable choice. The sets on U.S. store shelves and Amazon are manufactured in Mexico, a country with longstanding trade relationships and established manufacturing infrastructure under the USMCA agreement.
However, LEGO cannot be listed as a brand that is “not made in China” without qualification. The company operates a fully owned factory in Jiaxing, China, that produces bricks sold throughout the Asia-Pacific region. If you purchase LEGO sets while traveling abroad or through international sellers, the country of manufacture may differ.
This is not a situation where LEGO outsources to Chinese contract manufacturers — LEGO owns and operates all of its factories directly, including the one in China. But for U.S. buyers, that factory is not part of your supply chain.
Verification
Country-of-origin information for LEGO is confirmed directly through LEGO’s corporate disclosures and official news releases. Set packaging sold in the United States reflects Mexican origin. The China factory’s existence and scope are disclosed by LEGO on its corporate website.
Our Verdict
LEGO sets purchased in the United States are made in Mexico. For shoppers specifically trying to avoid Chinese-manufactured goods, U.S.-market LEGO qualifies — with the knowledge that the brand does operate a factory in China for other markets. We recommend purchasing through U.S. retailers or verified U.S.-market Amazon listings to ensure Mexican origin.
Note: LEGO’s Virginia factory is expected to begin production in 2027. Once operational, some U.S.-market sets may shift to domestic origin. We will update this post accordingly.
We verify country-of-origin claims using manufacturer disclosures, product labels, and trade records. If something has changed, email us at webmaster@whybuyfromchina.com
