Are Oakley Sunglasses Made in China?
Yes. Most Oakley sunglasses sold at retail are manufactured in China. That has been the case since 2007, when Luxottica acquired Oakley in a $2.1 billion deal and moved production into its global factory network. Before the acquisition, Oakley manufactured in the United States – some pairs were even made at the Foothill Ranch headquarters itself.
Oakley is still designed and engineered at its Foothill Ranch, California headquarters. The Prizm lens technology, HDO optics, and frame geometry are still developed in California. The manufacturing address changed – the product development did not. That is the honest version of this answer.

The Manufacturing History
Oakley was founded in 1975 by Jim Jannard and manufactured in the United States from the start. The company built a reputation on American-made performance eyewear through the 1980s and 1990s, with frames engineered and produced domestically. That changed on November 15, 2007, when Luxottica completed its acquisition of Oakley. Luxottica already operated large factory networks in Italy and China, and production began shifting to those facilities after the deal closed.
Luxottica’s acquisition was controversial at the time – the deal was criticized as a potential antitrust concern given Luxottica’s existing dominance of the eyewear market. It also owned Ray-Ban, Persol, and Vogue, and operated Sunglass Hut as its retail chain. Adding Oakley gave the conglomerate control of the most recognizable performance sunglass brand in the US market. Production of Oakley frames moved to Luxottica’s overseas facilities in the years following the acquisition. By approximately 2013, most standard consumer models were being stamped Made in China.
Luxottica later merged with French lens manufacturer Essilor in 2018 to form EssilorLuxottica, the largest eyewear company in the world. Oakley operates as a brand within that portfolio today.
Which Oakley Models Are Made in China?
The standard consumer line. That includes the Holbrook, Frogskins, Gascan, Fuel Cell, Sutro, and Clifden – Oakley’s most popular and widely sold frames. All are O-Matter or acetate construction. Standard O-Matter, Wireframe, and Acetate frame models are made in China and stamped accordingly on the earstem.
The exceptions are Oakley Standard Issue ballistic and military models, which are still made in the USA, and some limited edition X-Metal re-releases. These are not available through standard retail channels. If you buy Oakleys at a sporting goods store, Sunglass Hut, or online at retail, you are buying China-manufactured frames. Oakley does not disclose country of manufacture on individual product pages on its website – you have to check the physical frame.
How to check your pair: Look at the earstem. “Made in China” confirms it. “Made in USA” confirms domestic manufacture. “Assembled in USA” means parts came from overseas and were assembled in the US. Most standard retail pairs purchased after 2013 read Made in China.
Alternatives Not Made in China
Three options cover the main reasons people buy Oakley: tactical and sport performance, polarized optical quality, and heritage design. None are manufactured in China.
Gatorz - Yuma, Arizona

American Optical - Vernon Hills, Illinois
American Optical has manufactured sunglasses in the United States since 1833 – the oldest optical company in the country. Production is currently at their Vernon Hills, Illinois facility, where frames are hand-built by workers at the Illinois factory. Their Original Pilot model was the first aviator issued to US military pilots in 1958 and went to the moon with the Apollo 11 crew – Neil Armstrong’s pair is on permanent display at the Smithsonian. Lifetime warranty on all solder joints.
AO is for buyers who want US manufacture and a documented military lineage at a lower price than Oakley’s premium tier. The Original Pilot ($200-$215) and Saratoga ($210-$220) are their two signature styles. This is not a sport performance frame – it is a heritage aviator. If you wore Oakleys for tactical or sport use, Gatorz is the better match. If you want an American-made frame with hard military history at a price that makes sense, AO is the answer.
