Allen Edmonds is the most accessible entry point into American-made dress shoes, available in a broad range of sizes and widths, and priced around $395 for the flagship Park Avenue. The construction is solid Goodyear welt with a resoling program. The 212-step production process has run at the Port Washington factory since 1922.
The caveat to know before buying: Goodyear-welted styles – the Park Avenue, Fifth Avenue, Strand, and McAllister among them – are completed entirely in Wisconsin and qualify. Hand-sewn styles have uppers cut in the Dominican Republic and shipped to Wisconsin for completion; those do not meet the FTC all-or-virtually-all standard. Loake has made shoes at the same Kettering factory since 1880 and holds a Royal Warrant from King Charles III – granted in 2025 – as Manufacturer of Men’s Footwear. The 1880 and Loake Shoemakers collections are Goodyear-welted and made entirely in Northamptonshire. If you want a well-made English brogue or oxford at a more accessible price than Crockett & Jones or Edward Green, Loake 1880 is the practical choice. What is Goodyear welt construction and why does it matter?
Goodyear welt is a construction method where the upper, insole, and outsole are stitched together through a strip of leather called a welt. The key practical benefit: the outsole can be removed and replaced without damaging the upper. Cheaper shoes - including most shoes made in China - use cement or direct injection construction, which bonds the sole permanently and makes resoling either impossible or not worth the cost. If you are buying shoes you expect to wear for a decade or more, Goodyear welt is the construction to look for.
Are Spanish shoes as good as English or Italian shoes?
At the equivalent price point, yes. Carmina is consistently rated alongside mid-tier English makers like Loake and Cheaney.
