Shoes Not Made in China

Dress shoes and leather casual shoes are one of the better categories for shoppers trying to avoid Chinese manufacturing. The United States still has a strong domestic shoemaking industry in Massachusetts, Maine, and Wisconsin. England’s Northamptonshire region has produced Goodyear-welted dress shoes for over a century. Spain’s Mallorca island has a six-generation footwear tradition. Every brand on this page has been verified against manufacturer disclosures and country-of-origin labeling.

This page covers dress shoes, casual leather shoes, and athletic shoes with verified production outside China. For work boots and heritage boots, see Boots Not Made in China. Both pages sit under the Clothing Not Made in China pillar.

One important note on athletic shoes: nearly all major brands – Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Vans, Converse – manufacture entirely in Asia. New Balance is the only exception to speak of, and only for certain specific models.

1. 🇺🇸 Alden Shoe Company

Alden Dress Shoe not made in China

Made in Middleborough, Massachusetts, USA. In production since 1884.

Alden is the benchmark for American dress shoes. Every pair is handcrafted at the Middleborough, Massachusetts factory by roughly 100 workers – many second and third generation – using Goodyear welt construction that allows the shoes to be resoled repeatedly. The range covers oxfords, bluchers, loafers, chukkas, and the well-known Indy boot. Shell cordovan models use leather from Horween in Chicago, the last cordovan tannery in the US, and develop a distinctive patina over years of wear.

If you want one pair of American-made dress shoes built to last decades, Alden is the place to start. Prices begin around $500 for calfskin and rise for cordovan. Alden does not sell on Amazon – purchases go through aldenshop.com and authorized dealers.

Verification: Alden has manufactured exclusively in Middleborough since 1884 and discloses country of origin on every product page and box. The company has never manufactured outside the United States.

2. 🇺🇸 Rancourt & Co.

Rancourt Ranger Moc

Made in Lewiston, Maine, USA. In production since 1967.

Rancourt makes the best American loafer and boat shoe at its price point. The Lewiston, Maine factory has operated since 1967 and uses genuine handsewn moccasin construction – a slower, more labor-intensive method where workers pierce the hide with an awl as it is stitched, rather than using pre-punched leather. The result is a shoe that conforms more precisely to the foot.

The range covers loafers, ranger mocs, boat shoes, and dress shoes from $200 to $450. These are the shoes Team USA wore at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening and closing ceremonies – their fourth time outfitting US Olympic athletes. Rancourt sells direct at rancourtandcompany.com with no middleman markup.

Verification: Rancourt states on its website that every pair is made in Lewiston, Maine. Confirmed through the 2024 Olympics partnership and multiple independent sources.

3. 🇺🇸 Allen Edmonds

Allen Edmonds Dress Shoe

Made in Port Washington, Wisconsin, USA.

Allen Edmonds is the most accessible entry point into American-made dress shoes, available in a broad range of sizes and widths, and priced around $395 for the flagship Park Avenue. The construction is solid Goodyear welt with a resoling program. The 212-step production process has run at the Port Washington factory since 1922.

The caveat to know before buying: Goodyear-welted styles – the Park Avenue, Fifth Avenue, Strand, and McAllister among them – are completed entirely in Wisconsin and qualify. Hand-sewn styles have uppers cut in the Dominican Republic and shipped to Wisconsin for completion; those do not meet the FTC all-or-virtually-all standard. Check for “Made in USA” on the tongue or insole of the specific pair before purchasing.

Verification: Allen Edmonds discloses the Dominican Republic upper production on its website and in Wikipedia. The Wisconsin production of Goodyear-welted styles is confirmed by the company’s Made Here page and Caleres investor materials.

*Recommended: Allen Edmonds Park Avenue Waterproof Cap-toe Oxford – around $450

4. 🇬🇧 Loake 1880

Loake 1880 Dress Shoes

Made in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England. 1880 and Loake Shoemakers collections only.

Loake has made shoes at the same Kettering factory since 1880 and holds a Royal Warrant from King Charles III – granted in 2025 – as Manufacturer of Men’s Footwear. The 1880 and Loake Shoemakers collections are Goodyear-welted and made entirely in Northamptonshire. If you want a well-made English brogue or oxford at a more accessible price than Crockett & Jones or Edward Green, Loake 1880 is the practical choice. Prices typically run $200-$350 for the English-made range.

Loake also produces a lower-priced Design Loake range made in India – not China. The company labels every shoe clearly with its country of origin – look for “Made in England” on the insole. Available through US retailers.

Verification: Loake’s own blog post on Made in England production confirms the factory split between Kettering and India. The company marks all shoes with country of origin as a matter of policy.

5. 🇫🇷 Mephisto

Mephisto Shoes

Made in Sarrebourg, France and Porto, Portugal. Mephisto, Mobils, and Sano lines only.

Mephisto is the right answer if comfort over long days on your feet is the primary requirement. Founded in 1965 in Sarrebourg, Alsace, the Mephisto, Mobils, and Sano lines are handcrafted in France and Portugal using 160-plus production steps, full-grain leather uppers, and a patented SOFT-AIR midsole that reduces joint impact over distance. Most styles are resolable. The silhouette is comfort-forward rather than traditional dress, but holds up to business casual in most environments.

The Allrounder line is made in Asia and does not qualify – both lines sit on the same website, so check the product page for country of origin before purchasing. Available at mephistousa.com and US retail locations including flagship stores in New York and Las Vegas.

Verification: Mephisto’s own website states production in France and Portugal for qualifying lines. Confirmed by multiple US retail descriptions and the brand’s official history page.

6. 🇪🇸 Carmina

Carmina Shoes

Made in Inca, Mallorca, Spain. In production since 1866.

Carmina offers the best price-to-quality ratio in European dress shoes at the $350-$600 range. The factory in Inca, Mallorca has roots to 1866 and is now in its sixth generation of the same family. Construction is Goodyear welt throughout. The lasts are slim and Mediterranean in profile – a good choice if English or American lasts feel too wide or boxy. The range covers oxfords, derbies, loafers, monk straps, and chelsea boots.

Carmina sells direct through carminashoemaker.com and has a New York City store for try-ons before buying. Strong option for buyers who have struggled to find a good fit in American or English lasts, or who want European dress shoes without Italian luxury pricing.

Verification: Carmina’s history page confirms the Inca, Mallorca factory and six-generation family ownership. Country of origin is disclosed on each product.

7. 🇺🇸 New Balance - Made in USA Line

New Balance Athletic Shoes 993 Made in USA

Made in Massachusetts and Maine, USA. Made in USA label required – most New Balance is imported.

New Balance is the only major athletic brand that manufactures in the United States at meaningful scale. Five factories in New England employ approximately 1,200 workers, including an expanded facility in Skowhegan, Maine that opened in September 2025. The 990v6, 992, and 993 are the core domestic models, retailing around $200-$215 at newbalance.com.

The Made in USA label on the tongue is the indicator – look for it on the specific pair. New Balance defines Made in USA as containing at least 70% domestic value, which it discloses clearly. The majority of the New Balance catalog is manufactured overseas; only specifically labeled models qualify for this page. See the New Balance brand post for the full model-by-model breakdown.

Verification: New Balance discloses factory locations and the 70% domestic value threshold on its website. The Skowhegan factory opening was confirmed via official press release, September 2025.

*Recommended: New Balance Men’s 990v6 Sneakers – around $200

8. 🇺🇸 SAS - San Antonio Shoemakers

SAS Simplify Shoe not made in China

Made in San Antonio, Texas, USA. In production since 1976.

SAS is the most practical answer for women who need a well-made, comfortable everyday shoe and want it made in the United States. Every pair is hand-cut and hand-stitched at the San Antonio factory by workers trained on a one-skill-at-a-time rotation system. The range spans casual, work, dress, and athletic styles – 88 size and width combinations for women, including slim, narrow, medium, wide, double wide, and triple wide in select styles. If you have struggled to find a domestic shoe in your width, SAS is the most likely solution.

Almost all SAS styles are made in Texas. The exception is the dress shoe line, which is made in Italy and also qualifies for this page. Check the insole label if you are buying a dress style and want to confirm origin. Available at sasshoes.com and Zappos. Prices range from $150 to $250 depending on style.

Verification: SAS’s San Antonio factory is open to tours and has been documented by the San Antonio Report and multiple independent sources. Country of origin is printed on the insole of every pair.

*Recommended: SAS Simplify – about $185

9. 🇮🇹 Thierry Rabotin

Thierry Rabotin Lena Leather

Made in Parabiago, Italy. Women’s shoes only.

Thierry Rabotin makes women’s shoes exclusively, in its own factory near Milan – one of the few remaining Italian shoe brands that owns its factory and sources all components from Italian suppliers. The production method is sacchetto construction, a traditional Italian technique involving up to 200 steps in which the lambskin lining is sewn into the shoe like a sack. The result is a shoe with no rigid internal structure – exceptionally light and flexible, conforming to the foot rather than constraining it.

The range covers flats, pumps, loafers, boots, and sneakers. If you want an Italian-made women’s dress shoe that prioritizes comfort without sacrificing appearance, Thierry Rabotin is the most credible option at its price point. Available at thierryrabotin.us. Prices typically $250-$450.

Verification: Thierry Rabotin’s US website confirms production at the Parabiago factory with all components sourced from Italian suppliers. The brand states it produces exclusively in Italy – no offshore lines.

*Recommended: Lena Leather – about $530

10. 🇪🇸 Andre Assous

Andre Assous Allison

Andre Assous has been handcrafting espadrilles and wedge sandals in Spain since the 1970s. The brand is designed in New York and produced by skilled craftsmen in Spain – each qualifying pair says “Handcrafted in Spain” on the label. Frequently Asked Questions

Related Pages

Can I get these shoes resoled?

Yes - all Goodyear-welted shoes on this page can be resoled, which is a primary reason to buy them. Alden uses authorized dealers. Allen Edmonds has its own Recraft program at the Port Washington factory. Loake offers a repair service through loake.com. Carmina and Thierry Rabotin can be resoled by any competent cobbler. Mephisto has an authorized refurbishment program. SAS offers a repair and resoling service through sasshoes.com. A well-maintained pair from any of these brands can realistically last 20 or more years.

What is Goodyear welt construction and why does it matter?

Goodyear welt is a construction method where the upper, insole, and outsole are stitched together through a strip of leather called a welt. The key practical benefit: the outsole can be removed and replaced without damaging the upper. Cheaper shoes - including most shoes made in China - use cement or direct injection construction, which bonds the sole permanently and makes resoling either impossible or not worth the cost. If you are buying shoes you expect to wear for a decade or more, Goodyear welt is the construction to look for.

Are Spanish shoes as good as English or Italian shoes?

At the equivalent price point, yes. Carmina is consistently rated alongside mid-tier English makers like Loake and Cheaney. Andre Assous and Carmina represent two different ends of the Spanish shoe tradition - Carmina for formal Goodyear-welted dress shoes, Andre Assous for handcrafted casual espadrilles and sandals. The main difference between Spanish and English dress shoes is the last shape - Spanish lasts tend to be narrower and more elongated, which suits some feet better than the rounder English toe box. If you have tried English shoes and found them too wide, a Spanish last is worth trying.

What should I look for on the label to confirm origin?

US Customs law requires country of origin to be disclosed on footwear - it will be on the tongue, insole, or box. For Allen Edmonds, look for "Made in USA" on the insole of the specific pair. For Loake, look for "Made in England" on the insole - the India-made Design Loake styles say "Made in India." For Mephisto, the qualifying lines say "Made in France" or "Made in Portugal." For New Balance, the "Made in USA" label appears on the tongue of qualifying models. For Andre Assous, look for "Handcrafted in Spain" on the label or shop the dedicated Made in Spain collection on their site. For SAS, country of origin is printed on the insole of every pair.

We verify country-of-origin claims using manufacturer disclosures, product labels, and import records. If something has changed, let us know.
