This applies across the price range – entry-level earbuds, gaming headsets, and many brands marketed as premium all come from Chinese factories. The brands below are verified exceptions: manufactured in Austria, Germany, France, Romania, and the USA.

1. 🇦🇹 Austrian Audio
Manufactured: Vienna, Austria
Austrian Audio was founded in 2017 in Vienna by a team of 22 former AKG engineers after Harman closed AKG’s Vienna development and manufacturing facility. The company draws on over 350 years of combined engineering experience from the AKG era. Every Hi-X headphone is designed and manufactured in Vienna – the drivers, ring magnet systems, and acoustic components are developed in-house. The Hi-X15 is the entry point at $119: a closed-back over-ear with a 44mm High Excursion driver and all-metal hinges. The Hi-X55 at $299 is the mid-range closed-back studio model. The Composer is the flagship open-back reference headphone at around $1,500.
The Hi-X15 at $119 is the most accessible non-China headphone on this page. At that price it competes directly with Chinese-made studio headphones from Sony and Sennheiser’s consumer line. 2. 🇺🇸 Grado
Manufactured: Brooklyn, New York, USA
Grado Labs has been making headphones by hand in Brooklyn, New York since 1953 – a family-owned operation in the same Bay Ridge townhouse for over 70 years. Joseph Grado founded the company and invented the world’s first stereo moving coil phono cartridge. His nephew John Grado took over and personally tests every pair before it leaves the factory using three reference recordings: Eric Clapton, Duke Ellington, and Ella Fitzgerald. Every over-ear and on-ear Grado headphone is hand-assembled in Brooklyn. The in-ear models are manufactured in China and are not listed here.
The SR60 at $125 is the entry point – wired, open-back, no noise cancellation, no app, no wireless. The SR225x at $200 is the mid-range step up. The RS1x at $695 is the flagship dynamic driver model. Open-back means sound leaks in both directions – these are home listening headphones, not commuter headphones. Available on Amazon and at audio specialty retailers.

3. 🇩🇪 Beyerdynamic
Manufactured: Heilbronn, Germany
Beyerdynamic has manufactured headphones and microphones in Heilbronn, Germany since 1924. Approximately 85% of the headphone and microphone range is handmade at the Heilbronn facility – including the DT 770, DT 880, DT 990, and the flagship T1. The DT 770 Pro is the standard closed-back reference headphone in recording studios, podcast booths, and broadcast facilities worldwide. In June 2025 the company was acquired by Chinese OEM manufacturer Cosonic International. The managing director confirmed manufacturing will continue in Heilbronn and the leadership team will remain intact.
The DT 770 Pro at $200 is closed-back – standard for tracking and isolation. The DT 990 Pro at $150 is the open-back equivalent used for mixing. 4. 🇺🇸 ZMF Headphones
Manufactured: Berwyn and Collinsville, Illinois, USA
ZMF Headphones was founded in 2011 by Zach Mehrbach in Chicago, Illinois. Every ZMF headphone is handcrafted at the company’s facilities in Berwyn, Illinois and Collinsville, Illinois – wooden cups CNC-machined in Collinsville and hand-assembled in Berwyn. ZMF uses exotic hardwoods including Sapele, Blackwood, and Stabilized Maple for the ear cups, combined with leather headbands, custom-wound drivers, and hand-selected components. No two pairs are identical. The company builds to order with lead times of several weeks.

5. 🇺🇸 Audeze
Manufactured: Santa Ana, California, USA
Audeze was founded in 2008 in a Southern California garage, adapting NASA thin-film technology to audio applications. Every Audeze planar magnetic and electrostatic driver is manufactured at the company’s facility in Santa Ana, California. The company holds 11 US patents on its driver technology. The LCD-2 ($995) established Audeze as the planar magnetic reference when it launched in 2009. The LCD-X ($1,199) is the current studio workhorse, used by mastering engineers at major labels. The LCD-5 ($4,500) is the current flagship. In August 2023, Audeze was acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment – California manufacturing continues unchanged.

6. 🇺🇸 Campfire Audio
Manufactured: Portland, Oregon, USA
Campfire Audio was founded in 2015 in Portland, Oregon by Ken Ball, the audio engineer behind ALO Audio. Every Campfire IEM is designed, machined, assembled, tested, and shipped from the company’s single location in Southeast Portland. The housings are machined from aluminum in-house. The Cascara at $499 is the entry point. The Andromeda ($1,099) is the flagship multi-balanced-armature IEM and has been in continuous production since 2016. The Supermoon ($1,099) uses a planar magnetic driver. All models are wired. Campfire does not manufacture in China at any stage.
In-ear monitors differ from consumer earbuds in driver quality, fit precision, and acoustic isolation. Dan Clark Audio – formerly MrSpeakers – designs and manufactures planar magnetic headphones in San Diego, California. Founded in 2012, the company holds six patents on headphone technology including the Acoustic Metamaterial Tuning System, a passive device placed between the driver and ear that uses waveguides and resonators to address treble resonance without EQ. The AEON RT at $899 is the entry point. The Stealth at $3,999 is the current flagship closed-back. All models are wired and hand-built in San Diego.

Manufactured: Baia Mare, Romania
Meze Audio was founded in 2011 by industrial designer Antonio Meze in Baia Mare, Romania. All headphones are designed and manufactured in Romania. The 99 Classics ($349) is the entry point – closed-back dynamic driver with walnut wood ear cups. The company made its name when the 99 Classics launched in 2015 and was immediately recognized as a credible alternative to German studio headphones at a lower price. The Empyrean II ($3,999) and Elite ($4,000) are the flagship planar magnetic models developed with Rinaro Isodynamics using an Isodynamic Hybrid Array driver.

Manufactured: Saint-Etienne, France
Focal has designed and manufactured loudspeakers and headphones in Saint-Etienne, France since 1979. The 188,000 square foot Saint-Etienne facility handles everything from driver production to final assembly. The company was designated a Living Heritage Company by the French government in recognition of its acoustics expertise and rare manufacturing techniques. The Clear MG ($1,499) is the mid-range open-back. The Utopia ($4,999) uses a pure beryllium diaphragm. Entry starts at the Azurys around $499. All audiophile-tier models are wired.
Focal’s headphone drivers use proprietary aluminum/magnesium M-shaped dome technology developed from their loudspeaker engineering. The Bathys is a consumer wireless model with a different driver configuration – the wired audiophile line is what qualifies here.
