1. 🇺🇸 Leatherman
Leatherman has manufactured every folding multi-tool it has ever sold in Portland, Oregon, where the company was founded by Tim Leatherman in 1983. The Portland facility handles stamping, grinding, assembly, and quality control using American steel. No Leatherman products are made in China — this is one of the cleanest sourcing records in the tool category at any price point.
The current lineup includes the Wave+ (18 tools, the most widely stocked model), the Arc (20 tools, one-handed magnetic opening), and the Signal (outdoor and survival use, includes fire starter and emergency whistle). Every Leatherman carries a 25-year warranty; the free Insider membership extends that to 40 years. I’ve tested this — sent a broken one back and had it handled without questions or receipts. Available on Amazon and at REI, Home Depot, and Ace Hardware. See more information at Is Leatherman Made in the USA?
- Best for EDC and field use — the default recommendation in the category
- USA (Portland, Oregon — entire production)
*Recommended: LEATHERMAN Wave+ – about $130
2. 🇺🇸 Gerber
Gerber was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1939 and has manufactured knives and tools at its Portland factory for most of its history. The Center-Drive is Gerber’s most documented USA-made folding tool — 14 tools built around a center-axis screwdriver that aligns like a real driver for maximum torque. One-thumb opening, spring-loaded needle-nose pliers, and a full-size 3.25-inch blade. Made in Portland; the sheath is made in China and is not part of the tool.
Not all Gerber products are made in Portland — the brand’s lower-priced lines and some accessories are produced elsewhere, including China. The Center-Drive and US military-contract tools are the documented Portland-made products. Check the individual product label before purchasing. Gerber carries a limited lifetime warranty. See more information on our blog at Is Gerber Made in the USA?
- Best for buyers who want a USA-made folding tool with a center-axis driver
- USA (Portland, Oregon — Center-Drive and select lines; not all Gerber products qualify)
The included sheath on the Center-Drive is made in China. The tool itself is made in Oregon.
*Recommended: Gerber Gear Center-Drive Multitool – about $145
3. 🇨🇭 Victorinox
Victorinox has manufactured its Swiss Army Knives and SwissTool folding tools in Ibach, Switzerland since Karl Elsener founded the company in 1884. The Ibach facility produces approximately 45,000 pocket knives daily. Every SwissTool — the SwissTool X, Spirit X, and Spirit X Plus — is marked country of origin: Switzerland on the product page and packaging. Victorinox manufactures nothing in China.
The SwissTool line is built around outside-opening tools that deploy without opening the pliers first — each tool locks individually with its own back-spring. The SwissTool Spirit X is the most practical everyday model: 24 tools in a compact format. The SwissTool X is the full-size version with 26 tools. Plus models include an expanded bit kit with ratchet. Victorinox carries a lifetime warranty against defects. Available on Amazon.
- Best for Swiss-manufactured folding tool with lifetime warranty and outside-opening tool access
- Switzerland (Ibach — all SwissTool and Swiss Army Knife products)
*Recommended: Victorinox Hiker Swiss Army Knife – about $32
4. 🇩🇪 Wiha
Wiha has been manufacturing precision hand tools in Schonach im Schwarzwald, Germany since 1939. The company’s screwdrivers, hex keys, nut drivers, torque tools, and insulated tool sets are manufactured at its German facilities. Wiha invented the modern precision screwdriver and holds a German AGR ergonomics certification for its SoftFinish handle design. The screwdriver lineup covers standard, insulated (1,000V-rated VDE certified), torque, and bit formats.
Manufacturing location varies by product line. Screwdrivers, hex keys, and most hand tools are made in Germany. Pliers and cutters are forged in Vietnam to Wiha’s ISO standards — not China. Check the product page country of origin before purchasing. For buyers specifically looking for German-made precision screwdrivers — particularly insulated sets for electrical work — Wiha is the most complete non-China option in the category. Available on Amazon.
- Best for German-made precision and insulated screwdrivers for electrical and professional use
- Germany (screwdrivers, hex keys, torque tools); Vietnam (pliers — not listed here)
Not all Wiha products are made in Germany. Pliers and cutters are forged in Vietnam. Verify country of origin on the product page before purchasing.
*Recommended: Wiha 32092 Slotted and Phillips Insulated Screwdriver Set – about $50
5. 🇨🇿 Wera
Wera is a German-founded tool company, headquartered in Wuppertal, that manufactures its screwdrivers, ratchets, bits, and wrenches at factories in Bystřice and Třebíč in the Czech Republic. Wera is not made in China. The Czech production operates under Wera’s own engineering standards and all facilities are ISO certified.
Wera is best known for three products. The Kraftform screwdriver features an ergonomic handle contoured to the hand’s natural grip, with a Lasertip treatment for grip in worn screw heads. The Zyklop ratchet combines five ratchet types in one tool with a swivel head for tight spaces. The Joker wrench adds a holding function to prevent slip-off. All three are available on Amazon. Wera carries a lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.
- Best for ergonomic screwdrivers, innovative ratchets, and wrenches from a German-engineered non-China brand
- Czech Republic (Bystřice and Třebíč — all production; German-engineered, not German-made)
*Recommended: Wera – Zyklop 8000 C, 1/2-inch Drive Ratchet – about $81
6. 🇩🇪 Stahlwille
Stahlwille has been manufacturing wrenches, socket sets, and torque tools in Wuppertal, Germany since 1862. The company specializes in precision hand tools for professional and industrial use — trades, automotive, aerospace, and calibration-sensitive environments where torque accuracy is critical. Stahlwille’s torque wrenches are certified to DIN EN ISO 6789 standards. Manufacturing is in Germany and has remained there throughout the company’s history.
The core product lines are combination wrenches, socket sets, ratchets, and torque wrenches. Stahlwille is less well known in the US consumer market than Knipex or Wera, but is widely used in European trade and industrial settings. Available through specialist tool suppliers and on Amazon, though selection on Amazon is narrower than through dedicated distributors.
- Best for professional-grade German wrenches and torque tools for trade and industrial use
- Germany (Wuppertal — all production)
*Recommended: Stahlwille 11051010 1/4″ Quick-Release Drive Handle – about $22
7. 🇺🇸 Chapman Manufacturing
Chapman Manufacturing has produced precision screwdriver sets and insert bit kits in Durham, Connecticut since John W. Chapman founded the company in 1936. All tools, raw materials, steel, and packaging are American-sourced and made in the USA. The company is currently owned and operated by Jill and Nicole, who took over from former owner Joel. Chapman’s record is one of the cleanest in the category – nothing is made offshore.
Chapman’s system is built around a 1/4-inch drive platform: insert bits, a midget ratchet, a screwdriver handle, and extensions that all interchange. The 5575 Master Set is the most complete everyday option with 51 bits covering Phillips, slotted, SAE and metric hex, Torx, and Robertson. The 7331 All-Purpose Set is a more compact entry point at 24 bits. The midget ratchet is 3.75 inches long, rated to 200 inch-lbs of torque, with a 20-tooth gear and 18-degree working arc for tight spaces. Non-magnetic. Lifetime warranty. Available on Amazon and direct from chapmanmfg.com.

The company is privately held and has remained in continuous American production throughout its history. Wright tools meet or exceed ASME standards and carry a lifetime warranty against defects in workmanship.
Wright’s best-known products are its combination wrenches, socket sets, and ratchets. The WrightGrip 2.0 design adds a patented grip surface to the wrench body to reduce fastener rounding – a practical feature for regular professional use. The 715 SAE Combination Wrench Set covers 5/16 inch to 1-1/4 inch in 15 pieces with a roll pouch. The 752 Metric Set covers 7mm to 22mm in 15 pieces. 9. 🇺🇸 Klein
Klein Tools is one of the most respected and recognizable Made in USA tool brands, particularly among electricians, linemen, and skilled tradespeople. Founded in 1857, Klein Tools has remained family-owned for over 160 years—a rarity in the modern tool industry—and continues to manufacture many of its core hand tools in the United States.
Klein is best known for its pliers, wire strippers, screwdrivers, crimpers, and insulated electrical tools, all designed with durability, safety, and ergonomics in mind. Their U.S.-made tools are produced using high-quality steel, strict quality controls, and designs refined through decades of real-world trade use. While some accessories and electronics are imported, Klein is notably transparent about country of origin, making it easier for buyers to choose American-made options. They may be a little more expensive than Channellock, but are still reasonably priced.
- Best for electricians and linemen
- United States
Recommended product: Klein Tools 32500 11-in-1 Screwdriver/Nut Driver Set, 8 Bits. Around $16 on Amazon.
10. 🇨🇭 PB Swiss Tools
PB Swiss Tools is widely regarded as one of the finest European hand tool brands in the world. Manufactured entirely in Switzerland, PB Swiss Tools is known for uncompromising precision, exceptional metallurgy and consistency that few manufacturers can match. Their tools are engineered for professional environments where accuracy, durability, and repeatability matter—such as aerospace, medical, industrial, and high-end mechanical work. They can be expensive, but worth it for the quality and durability.
PB Swiss is especially famous for its hex keys and screwdrivers, which feature perfectly machined tips, optimal heat treatment, and distinctive color-coded systems that make tool identification fast and intuitive. Unlike mass-market brands, PB Swiss maintains tight control over every stage of production, from steel processing to final finishing, ensuring reliable performance over decades of use.
- Best for hex keys and screwdrivers
- Switzerland
Recommended product: PB SWISS TOOLS Rainbow Hex Key Set. Around $80 on Amazon.
11. 🇯🇵 Vessel
Vessel is an iconic Japanese tool brand best known for its exceptionally well-engineered screwdrivers and specialty hand tools. Founded in 1916, Vessel has built a global reputation for precision manufacturing, excellent steel treatment, and tools designed to fit fasteners exactly as intended—especially JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screws commonly found in Japanese vehicles, motorcycles, electronics and machinery. They are somewhat more affordably priced than most imported brands.
What sets Vessel apart is its focus on performance at the tip. Their screwdrivers are hardened to precise specifications, reducing cam-out and fastener damage, even under high torque. Many Vessel tools are still manufactured in Japan, with tight quality control and consistent materials that professionals quickly notice in daily use. Once someone uses a proper JIS screwdriver on a stubborn fastener, the difference is immediate.
- Best for JIS screwdrivers
- Japan
Recommended product: VESSEL BALL GRIP 1/4″ Hex Bit Interchangeable Screwdriver. Around $14 at Amazon.
12. 🇺🇸 Tekton
Tekton is a standout choice for shoppers who want quality tools not made in China without paying luxury-brand prices. Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Tekton is completely transparent about where its tools are manufactured. Many of its most popular hand tools, including socket sets, ratchets, and wrenches, are made in the USA (with most of the others produced in Taiwan (not China), clearly labeled on the Specifications page).
Tekton has built a loyal following by focusing on smart design, consistent quality control, and one of the best warranties in the business: if it breaks, they replace it fast and without hassle. They don’t need a receipt, just an image of your broken tool and you don’t need to return the product. Their tools are designed for real-world use, whether you’re a professional mechanic, serious DIYer, or weekend fixer.
For buyers actively trying to avoid Chinese manufacturing while still getting durable, well-priced tools, Tekton hits a rare sweet spot: honest sourcing, American-made options, and no corporate spin. (Just solid steel and fewer regrets.)
- Best for the value conscious
- USA/Taiwan
Recommended product: Tekton 16-Inch Groove Joint Pliers. Around $35 at Amazon.
13. 🇺🇸 Snap-on
Snap-on was founded in 1920 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on a straightforward idea: interchangeable sockets that snap onto a universal handle. A century later, the company still manufactures in the United States, with primary production in Conway, South Carolina and Elizabethton, Tennessee, plus facilities in several other states.
The tools are sold exclusively through franchised dealer vans and their Web site — you won’t find them at Home Depot. That distribution model exists because Snap-on’s customers are professional mechanics who need tools that don’t fail at the worst possible time. The warranty reflects that: broken tools are replaced, no questions.
They are not cheap. The price premium over Milwaukee or Craftsman is real and significant. A Snap-on ratchet costs three to five times what a comparable tool costs elsewhere. For hobbyists, that’s hard to justify. For mechanics who bill by the hour, a tool that never fails and never leaves the shop for warranty service pays for itself.
If you’re buying once and keeping it for 30 years, Snap-on is the answer.
- Best for sockets for professional mechanics
- USA
