Mattresses Not Made in China
Many mattresses sold in the United States are imported, and until 2019 China was the largest source. That year, antidumping duties on Chinese mattresses pushed much of that production to Vietnam, Indonesia, and Cambodia rather than back to the US. Imports show up at every price point - from budget foam beds to several brands that market heavily on quality and comfort without disclosing where production takes place. The verified alternatives are all American-made, all subject to federal flammability regulations, and in most cases independently certified for foam safety and chemical emissions.
This page covers six verified US manufacturers across the foam, hybrid, latex, and organic tiers. All sell direct, and Naturepedic and Tempur-Pedic are also sold on Amazon. Where a trial period or warranty is relevant to the purchase decision, we include it. See also our Bedding and Furniture pages.

1. 🇺🇸 Brooklyn Bedding - Made in Phoenix, Arizona
Brooklyn Bedding has manufactured mattresses at its Phoenix, Arizona facility since 2008. The company builds mattresses on demand rather than keeping finished inventory - each order is assembled after purchase at the Phoenix plant. Brooklyn Bedding is one of the few direct-to-consumer mattress brands that owns its own factory; most competitors contract manufacturing to third parties. CertiPUR-US certified foam throughout all models.
The Signature Hybrid ($1,025-$1,465 queen) is the core offering - individually wrapped coils with three layers of proprietary foam, available in soft, medium, and firm. Brooklyn Bedding also makes the Titan Plus for heavier sleepers and the Aurora Luxe for temperature regulation. All models ship free with a 120-night trial and a limited lifetime warranty. No white-glove delivery - compressed and rolled in a box.
What to buy: Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Medium - around $1,099 queen. Factory-direct, CertiPUR-US certified, 120-night trial.
Best for: Buyers who want verified US manufacturing at a mid-range price

2. 🇺🇸 Naturepedic - Made in Chagrin Falls, Ohio
Naturepedic has manufactured organic mattresses at its Chagrin Falls, Ohio facility since 2003. The company was founded specifically to address chemical concerns in conventional mattresses - no polyurethane foam, no fiberglass, no chemical flame retardants. Every Naturepedic mattress carries GOTS certification, GREENGUARD Gold certification for low chemical emissions, and EWG Verified status - the first mattress brand to receive that designation. Organic cotton is sourced from Texas farms and traced back to the field.
Our pick is the Serenade, at $1,999 for a queen. It puts a 2-inch organic latex layer over 8-inch glueless encased coils with edge support, quilted in organic cotton and wool, and comes in Firm or Cushion Firm. Buyers who want to adjust firmness by zone later can step up to the EOS Classic ($3,499 queen). Naturepedic started out making crib mattresses, and that line is still part of the catalog for parents who want one brand for the whole house. Bought direct, every model ships free with a 100-night trial, and all carry a 25-year warranty.
Best for: Buyers who want certified organic materials with documented sourcing, and parents buying for children
Made in: Chagrin Falls, Ohio
3. 🇺🇸 Avocado - Made in Fullerton, California
Avocado handcrafts mattresses at its own factory in Fullerton, California. The latex is sourced from certified organic rubber tree farms in India and Guatemala - not China. Wool and cotton are certified organic under GOTS. Avocado holds both GREENGUARD Gold and GOTS certifications and is a certified B Corporation. It is the most rigorously certified organic option in the US market at its price point.
The Avocado Green Mattress ($2,099 queen) is the flagship - natural latex over individually wrapped coils, available in standard and pillow top. The Vegan Mattress substitutes organic cotton batting for wool for buyers who avoid animal products. Ships free with a 365-night trial and a 25-year warranty - tied with Saatva for the longest trial on this page.
What to buy: Avocado Green Mattress standard - around $1,800 queen on sale. GOTS and GREENGUARD Gold certified, Fullerton factory, 365-night trial.
Best for: Buyers who want certified organic latex with a full-year trial
Made in: Fullerton, California
4. 🇺🇸 WinkBeds - Hand-Built in Wisconsin
WinkBeds builds mattresses by hand at its original Watertown, Wisconsin factory using individually wrapped coils, latex, and proprietary foam layers assembled by hand rather than automated production lines. CertiPUR-US certified foam throughout. Four firmness options - Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus for heavier sleepers - built at the Watertown facility and newer WinkBeds plants in Texas, Connecticut, Florida, and Arizona.
The WinkBed hybrid ($1,799 queen) is the flagship model - WinkBeds also makes the GravityLux, an all-foam mattress, and the EcoCloud, a latex hybrid. The lifetime comfort guarantee covers permanent body impressions and sagging beyond a specified threshold, not just manufacturing defects. Ships free with a 120-night trial.
What to buy: WinkBed Luxury Firm - around $1,799 queen. Hand-built in Wisconsin, lifetime comfort guarantee, CertiPUR-US certified.

6. 🇺🇸 Tempur-Pedic - Made in Virginia and New Mexico
Tempur-Pedic, headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky since 1992, manufactures its mattresses at company plants in Duffield, Virginia and Albuquerque, New Mexico. The TEMPUR material - a proprietary viscoelastic foam originally adapted from NASA pressure-absorbing technology - was first developed by Swedish foam maker Fagerdala. The foam is made by Tempur-Pedic from its own formula, not sourced from third-party suppliers. Tempur-Pedic is one of the few mattress brands that produces its core material in-house. CertiPUR-US certified throughout.
The TEMPUR-Adapt ($2,199-$2,499 queen) is the entry point; the TEMPUR-ProAdapt adds additional pressure-relieving layers; the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt ($3,799-$4,199 queen) is the flagship. Available through Tempur-Pedic's website and authorized retail partners. White-glove delivery is included when you buy direct; some retailers charge for it. 90-night trial and a 10-year warranty - the shortest trial period on this page, which reflects the cost and logistics of returning a premium mattress rather than lower product confidence.
Best for: Buyers who want premium in-house memory foam with the deepest pressure relief in the category
Made in: Duffield, Virginia and Albuquerque, New Mexico
What to Avoid
Nectar is the clearest example. In a settlement with the FTC, Nectar agreed to stop claiming its mattresses were "Designed and Assembled in USA" after the FTC found they were wholly imported from China. Casper says its mattresses are assembled in the US, but it does not publish a full manufacturing disclosure - check the specific model before purchasing.
'Assembled in USA' with Chinese components is not the same as US-made. Several brands assemble in US warehouses using foam and components manufactured in China. The FTC requires that 'Made in USA' claims be substantiated - if a brand uses 'assembled in' language, ask which components are domestic.
Fiberglass in budget mattresses is a documented hazard. Several Chinese-made mattresses use fiberglass as a flame barrier. When the cover is removed - including for washing - fiberglass particles can spread through the home and cause skin and respiratory irritation. None of the brands on this page use fiberglass as a flame barrier.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Casper mattresses made in China?
Casper says its mattresses are assembled in the US, with foam layers poured domestically, and mattresses sold in Canada are made in Canada. Check the specific model's product page for country of manufacture before purchasing. Casper does not publish a comprehensive manufacturing disclosure that covers its full product line.
What is CertiPUR-US and does it matter?
CertiPUR-US is a voluntary certification that verifies polyurethane foam was made without ozone depleting chemicals, heavy metals, formaldehyde, or prohibited flame retardants, and meets emissions standards for indoor air quality. It does not verify country of manufacture - Chinese-made foam can carry the certification. All brands on this page carry CertiPUR-US where polyurethane foam is used, and additionally manufacture in the USA.
Does a longer trial period mean a better mattress?
No. Trial length is a marketing and logistics decision, not a quality signal. Avocado offers 365 nights; Tempur-Pedic offers 90. Tempur-Pedic's shorter trial reflects the cost and logistics of returning a premium mattress, not lower confidence in the product. A 365-night trial on a $1,200 mattress costs the brand less per return than a 90-night trial on a $4,000 one. Evaluate the mattress on construction, materials, and certifications - not the length of the return window.
Do US-made mattresses cost more than Chinese-made alternatives?
At equivalent quality tiers, yes - domestic labor and materials cost more than Chinese production. The price premium reflects genuine manufacturing differences. Budget mattresses under $500 are almost universally imported, now mostly from Southeast Asia rather than China; the US-made market starts at roughly $800 and the strongest options are in the $1,200-$2,500 range. Trial periods of 90-365 nights on all brands listed here reduce the purchase risk.
