Sporting Goods Not Made in China

Last verified: May 2026  ·  7 brands  ·  6 categories

Sporting goods is one of the harder categories for NMIC shoppers. Most balls, racquets, helmets, and team equipment — including many products from brands with American names and histories — are manufactured overseas. This page covers verified exceptions: brands that manufacture their core product lines outside China. Every brand here has been checked against manufacturer disclosures and country-of-origin documentation.

On ownership vs. manufacturing: Two brands on this page — Wilson and Louisville Slugger — are manufactured in the United States but are owned by Amer Sports, which is majority-owned by Chinese investment group Anta Sports. Our standard is country of manufacture, not corporate ownership. We flag ownership transparently so you can make your own call.

How we verify: Each brand on this page was confirmed against manufacturer disclosures, FTC country-of-origin standards, CPSC filings, and import records where available. Brands with mixed-origin product lines are clearly flagged. We re-verify on a rolling basis — if a brand moves production, they come off this page.

Baseball Gloves

Nokona is the only baseball glove manufacturer in continuous domestic operation in the United States. Every other major glove brand — Rawlings, Wilson, Mizuno — moved production overseas in the 1960s and 1970s. Nokona never did.

Nokona

Nokona Baseball Glove not made in China

Nokona has handcrafted baseball and softball gloves in Nocona, Texas since 1934. The company employs around 42 workers who individually cut, stamp, stitch, lace, and embroider each glove by hand at a single facility. Every glove carries the “Made N USA” marking, applied only when the product is made entirely or almost entirely in the United States. A 2006 factory fire destroyed the original building; Nokona was back in production within ten days and never missed a payroll.

Nokona uses premium leathers including American-sourced steerhide, kangaroo, and bison. The brand has endorsements from Nolan Ryan — who has said his first childhood glove was a Nokona — and several current MLB players including Texas Rangers pitcher Cody Bradford. Prices range from around $350 for youth and entry models to $800 or more for EdgeX and custom ShowGlove builds. Factory tours are available at the Nocona facility.

  • Best for: Serious players at any level seeking an NMIC alternative to Rawlings and Wilson
  • Made in: Nocona, Texas, USA — every glove, no exceptions
  • Price range: $350–$800+

Recommended: Nokona S-200I Handcrafted Alpha Baseball Glove (~$350, made in Nocona, TX) for younger players. American Kip 1150 (~$500) for adult infielders.

Football

Wilson has manufactured every NFL game ball at its Ada, Ohio facility since 1955. The football line is the one Wilson product that has never moved overseas. Note: Wilson Sporting Goods is owned by Amer Sports, which is majority-owned by Anta Sports of China. Manufacturing is in the United States; corporate ownership is not.

Wilson (Footballs only)

Wilson Football not made in China

Wilson has handcrafted footballs in Ada, Ohio since 1955, and every NFL game ball — known as “The Duke” — has been made there since the company became the official football of the NFL in 1941. The Ada facility opened a new $15 million, 88,000 square foot factory in June 2024, nearly doubling production capacity while keeping all manufacturing in Ohio. Around 150 skilled craftsmen and craftswomen produce over 700,000 footballs per year through a 20-step process that is largely done by hand. The town’s water tower reads “Made in Ada.”

The full leather football line — The Duke, GST, and Omega — is made in Ada. Wilson also produces footballs for high school and collegiate play at the same facility. The Ada factory offers public tours and a retail store on site. Ownership caveat: Wilson Sporting Goods was sold to Amer Sports in 2019, which is majority-owned by Anta Sports, a Chinese company. The footballs are made in the United States; revenue flows to Chinese-controlled ownership.

  • Best for: Players, coaches, and fans who want an NMIC football with a verified domestic manufacturing story
  • Made in: Ada, Ohio, USA — leather football line only
  • Ownership note: Wilson is majority-owned by Chinese investment group Anta Sports via Amer Sports.

Recommended: Wilson The Duke NFL Replica Football (~$45, made in Ada, OH) — the same ball used in every NFL game since 1941.

Baseball Bats

Louisville Slugger wood bats are still made in Louisville, Kentucky, at the same downtown facility where Hillerich & Bradsby has produced bats since the 1800s. The brand is now owned by Wilson and carries the same Anta Sports ownership caveat.

Louisville Slugger (Wood bats only)

Louisville Slugger Baseball Bat not made in China

Louisville Slugger wood bats have been made in Louisville, Kentucky since 1884, when Bud Hillerich crafted the first bat for Louisville Eclipse player Pete Browning. The factory at 800 West Main Street in downtown Louisville has operated continuously since and currently produces around 3,000 full-size bats daily through a combination of CNC lathes and hand-finishing. The facility is open for public tours and includes the Louisville Slugger Museum, a working factory floor, and a 120-foot replica bat outside the building.

The wood bat line — maple, ash, and birch — is made in Louisville. Composite and aluminum bats in the consumer lineup are generally manufactured overseas and do not qualify for this page. Pro Prime wood bats, which supply current MLB players including Kyle Schwarber and Ronald Acuña Jr., are made at the Louisville factory. Ownership caveat: Louisville Slugger was sold to Wilson Sporting Goods in 2015, which is itself owned by Amer Sports and majority-owned by Anta Sports of China. Manufacturing is in the United States; corporate ownership is not.

  • Best for: Baseball players who want an NMIC wood bat with over 140 years of American manufacturing history
  • Made in: Louisville, Kentucky, USA — wood bats only
  • Ownership note: Louisville Slugger is majority-owned by Chinese investment group Anta Sports via Wilson and Amer Sports. Composite and aluminum bats are made overseas — wood bats only qualify.

Recommended: Louisville Slugger Unisex Select Cut C271 Maple Wood Baseball Bat (~$140, made in Louisville, KY) — the standard pro model maple bat.

Strength & Fitness Equipment

Strength training is one of the few sporting goods categories where domestic manufacturing has remained competitive at scale. Rogue designs and manufactures its core equipment at a 600,000 square foot campus in Columbus, Ohio.

Rogue Fitness

Rogue Barbell

Rogue Fitness was founded in Columbus, Ohio in 2006 and has manufactured its strength and conditioning equipment at its Columbus campus ever since. Barbells, power racks, kettlebells, plates, sleds, and functional trainers are designed, machined, welded, and finished in-house. The company processed 26 million pounds of American steel in a single recent production year. Rogue is the official equipment supplier of the CrossFit Games, USA Weightlifting, the Arnold Strongman Classic, and the World’s Strongest Man competition.

The Ohio Bar is the benchmark domestic barbell — machined in Columbus from 190,000 PSI tensile strength steel with dual knurl marks and a lifetime warranty against bending. Kettlebells are cast at foundries in Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Power racks are welded and powder-coated in Columbus. Not every product Rogue sells is domestically made, as the company also carries equipment from other manufacturers — look for the “Made in the USA” badge on the specific product page before purchasing.

  • Best for: Home gym builders, CrossFit athletes, powerlifters, strength coaches
  • Made in: Columbus, Ohio, USA — core product lines; verify the Made in USA badge per item
  • Warranty: Lifetime warranty against bending on barbells

Recommended: Rogue Ohio Bar (~$350, made in Columbus, OH) — the standard American-made barbell for home and commercial gyms.

Athletic Footwear

New Balance is the only major athletic footwear brand that continues to manufacture a significant product line in the United States. Every other major brand — Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Under Armour — manufactures entirely overseas.

New Balance

New Balance Athletic Shoes 993 Made in USA

New Balance operates five factories in Massachusetts and Maine, employing over 1,000 workers. The company produces its domestic line — including the 990, 993, 574, and 1540 series — at these facilities. New Balance applies the Made in USA label only to models where at least 70% of the total manufacturing cost is domestic, meeting the FTC standard. The domestic factories have operated continuously since the brand’s founding in Boston in 1906.

The 990 series is the flagship domestic line — a running and walking shoe with a premium mesh upper, ENCAP midsole, and a wide range of width options. The 993 is the broader, more cushioned alternative favored by walkers and those on their feet all day. Most New Balance shoes are made overseas — confirm the specific model carries domestic labeling before purchasing. It will be stated clearly in the product listing when it applies.

  • Best for: Runners, walkers, anyone who wants a verified NMIC athletic shoe
  • Made in: Massachusetts and Maine, USA — specific models only (verify before purchase)
  • Caveat: Most New Balance shoes are made overseas — always confirm the model.

Recommended: New Balance 990v6 (~$185, made in USA) — the flagship domestic running shoe, available in men’s and women’s widths.

Athletic Socks

Performance athletic socks are one of the few apparel categories where domestic manufacturing remains strong. Darn Tough produces its entire line at a single mill in Vermont.

Darn Tough

Darn Tough Socks not made in China

Darn Tough socks are manufactured at Cabot Hosiery Mills in Northfield, Vermont, a facility that has operated continuously since 1978. The entire product line — running, hiking, work, ski, and casual socks — is made in Northfield. The mill uses fine Merino wool and runs the production process from raw fiber through finished sock at a single facility.

For athletic use, the Run No Show Tab Ultra-Lightweight is built for high-mileage runners — thin, blister-resistant, and temperature-regulating. The Hiker Micro Crew Cushion is the more versatile option for trail running, day hikes, and outdoor training. Every pair carries an unconditional lifetime guarantee: any sock that wears out is replaced free, no receipt needed, no questions asked.

  • Best for: Runners, hikers, outdoor athletes, anyone who goes through socks quickly
  • Made in: Northfield, Vermont, USA — every pair, no exceptions
  • Warranty: Unconditional lifetime guarantee

Recommended: Darn Tough Run No Show Tab Ultra-Lightweight (~$20/pair, made in Vermont) — purpose-built for runners.

Crossbows

Ravin is the only major crossbow manufacturer producing at scale in the United States. The brand competes at the premium end of the market, and its Wisconsin facility handles design, machining, and assembly.

Ravin

Ravin R470 Crossbow made in USA

Ravin crossbows are designed and manufactured in Superior, Wisconsin, where the company has operated since its founding in 2015. The facility handles design, machining, and final assembly of the crossbow line, which spans from compact hunting models to the flagship R500, the fastest production crossbow ever made at 500 FPS. Ravin’s patented HeliCoil cam system – which rotates cams up to 360 degrees to keep them level throughout the draw cycle – is produced at the same Superior location. The brand has received “Best Overall Crossbow” recognition from Outdoor Life multiple years running.

Ravin is owned by Velocity Outdoor, which also owns CenterPoint Crossbows, a lower-priced line that does not manufacture domestically. The crossbows are made in Wisconsin; some accessory components (scopes, cases) may be sourced internationally. The core crossbow itself is U.S.-made. Current models include the R470, R29X, and R18 – each built for different hunting scenarios and body configurations.

  • Best for: Hunters and competitive shooters who want a high-performance, verified NMIC crossbow
  • Made in: Superior, Wisconsin, USA — crossbow line; verify accessories separately

Recommended: Ravin R470 – the company’s current flagship, compact and maneuverable, purpose-built for hunting.

How to Verify Before You Buy

Sporting goods is a category where American-sounding brand names are especially misleading. Here is how to check before purchasing:

  • Check ownership, not just branding — Wilson Sporting Goods and Louisville Slugger are manufactured in the United States but are majority-owned by a Chinese investment group. Brand heritage does not equal domestic ownership or manufacturing.
  • Look for explicit country-of-origin labeling — “Designed in USA” and “Assembled in USA” are not the same as “Made in USA” under FTC standards.
  • Verify specific models, not entire brands — for brands like New Balance and Rogue, not every product qualifies. Check the product page for the Made in USA badge before purchasing.
  • Use our brand directory — our brand directory covers 220+ brands with verified origin information, updated on a rolling basis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is sporting goods such a difficult NMIC category?

Most major brands moved production to Asia between the 1960s and 1990s to reduce labor costs — an industry-wide shift that happened faster in sporting goods than almost anywhere else. The economics of manufacturing balls, racquets, and most hard goods overseas are difficult to reverse at scale. Brands that stayed domestic generally did so by occupying premium market positions where craftsmanship justifies higher prices, or by building domestic manufacturing as a core part of their identity.

Is Rawlings made in the USA?

Rawlings baseball gloves are manufactured in the Philippines and elsewhere overseas. The brand is American in origin — founded in St. Louis in 1887 — and supplies official game balls to Major League Baseball, but glove manufacturing moved offshore decades ago. The official MLB baseball itself is made in Costa Rica. Nokona is the only baseball glove manufacturer still producing in the United States.

Are any golf clubs or tennis racquets not made in China?

A small number of boutique golf putter manufacturers make clubs domestically — Bettinardi Golf produces putters near Chicago, and L.A.B. Golf makes putters in Oregon. Major golf brands including Titleist, Callaway, TaylorMade, and Ping manufacture primarily in Asia. Tennis racquets have no major domestic producers — every significant frame brand manufactures overseas.

What fitness equipment besides Rogue is manufactured outside China?

Several smaller brands produce domestic strength equipment, including Sorinex (power racks and platforms, Lexington, South Carolina) and American Barbell (barbells and plates, San Diego, California). York Barbell, founded in York, Pennsylvania in 1932, makes its weightlifting platforms and select specifically labeled barbells domestically — but most of its current product line is manufactured in China, so verify the individual item before purchasing. Cardio equipment — treadmills, stationary bikes, rowing machines — is manufactured overseas by virtually every brand at every price point.

Does corporate ownership affect whether a product counts as NMIC?

That depends on what matters to you. Our standard on this site is country of manufacture — where the product is physically made. Wilson footballs and Louisville Slugger wood bats are manufactured in the United States and do not contain Chinese-made components. The revenue from purchasing them flows through corporate ownership structures that include Chinese investment. We document both facts and leave the call to you.

Are any soccer balls or basketballs manufactured outside China?

Not at meaningful commercial scale. Nearly all soccer balls and basketballs — including official match balls for major leagues and tournaments — are manufactured in Pakistan, China, or Southeast Asia. There are no major domestic manufacturers of inflated game balls in the United States for these sports.
