Best Overall Outdoor & Camping Gear Brands

Gray and green plastic storage container with latches.

1. 🇺🇸 Pelican Elite Coolers

Pelican was founded in 1976 in Torrance, California, where the company still operates a 200,000-square-foot manufacturing facility. The Elite Cooler line — from 20 quart to 250 quart — is manufactured in Torrance, with additional production at plants in South Deerfield, Massachusetts and Plymouth, Minnesota. Pelican’s protective cases are also made at these domestic facilities.

The Elite Coolers carry a lifetime “you break it, we replace it” warranty and are certified bear-resistant. Pelican’s product pages mark USA-made items explicitly — check for the Made in USA stamp before purchasing, as some soft-sided products and some drinkware are not domestic. Buy the Elite hard-sided line for confirmed domestic manufacturing.

Hard-sided coolers for anyone who wants domestic manufacturing and a lifetime warranty from a 50-year American company.

*Recommended: Pelican 20 Quart Elite Cooler – around $200

A teal portable cooler with black latches and a sturdy handle.

2. 🇺🇸 ORCA

ORCA (Outdoor Recreation Company of America) was founded in 2012 with the specific goal of building a premium rotomolded cooler in the United States. Every hard-sided ORCA cooler is manufactured at their facilities in Nashville, Tennessee and Streetsboro, Ohio. The company’s founding story is straightforward: the founders wanted a better cooler and weren’t willing to import it.

All hard-sided ORCA coolers carry a lifetime warranty. Ice retention is competitive with Yeti — third-party tests consistently show 10 or more days — at a price point typically $50-$100 lower. ORCA markets directly to hunters, fishermen, and outdoor enthusiasts and has licensing agreements with several professional sports leagues.

Drinkware and soft-sided products: verify the specific item before purchasing, as not all ORCA drinkware is domestic.

ORCA offers a verified American-made cooler at a better price than Yeti.

Igloo Cooler Made in USA

3. 🇺🇸 Igloo

Igloo was founded in 1947 in Katy, Texas as a metalworking shop making metal water coolers for oil field workers. That facility is still operating — now a 2.4 million square foot complex employing over 1,200 workers and producing more than 55,000 hard-sided coolers per day, roughly 16 million per year. By volume, Igloo is the largest cooler manufacturer in the world, and most of that volume is made in Texas.

According to Igloo representatives, approximately 95% of their plastic hard-sided coolers are made in Katy. The remaining 5% — primarily soft-sided coolers and some accessories — are manufactured overseas, including in China.

Igloo’s own website maintains a dedicated Made in USA page listing qualifying models. The hard-sided lines confirmed as domestic include the IMX Collection, Trailmate, Tag Along Too, MaxCold series, and the Playmate — the iconic lunchbox-style cooler that has been made in Texas since 1971 and is now in the permanent collection of several design museums. Soft-sided coolers are not made in the USA.

One ownership note: Igloo has been owned since 2021 by Dometic Group, a Swedish company. The US manufacturing operation has continued unchanged under that ownership.

How to verify: Igloo marks USA-made products clearly on their website and on product packaging. Check the product detail page on igloocoolers.com before purchasing — the Made in USA designation appears under the product description on qualifying models. At retail, check the box.

Igloo is for buyers who want a verified American-made hard cooler at a mainstream price point — Igloo’s domestic hard-sided coolers are widely available at Walmart, Target, and Home Depot, which no other USA-made premium cooler brand can claim.

*Recommended: Igloo Hard Cooler Insulated Ice Chests – around $115

Nalgene Bottle made in USA

4. 🇺🇸 Nalgene

Nalgene water bottles have been made in Rochester, New York since the company entered the outdoor market, with materials sourced from Tennessee. Nalgene is a subsidiary of Thermo Fisher Scientific and originated in laboratory plastics manufacturing — the outdoor bottle line came later.

Almost all Nalgene bottles are made in Rochester. The one caveat: stainless steel bottles and some soft bottle carriers are imported. The classic wide-mouth and narrow-mouth plastic bottles — the core of what Nalgene is known for — are domestic.

In 2020 Nalgene launched the Sustain line, made from 50% recycled plastic and still manufactured in Rochester. Manufacturing in the US versus overseas reduces their carbon footprint by roughly 9x, according to the company’s own supply chain analysis.

Nalgene makes a durable, domestic water bottle at a moderate price.

*Recommended: Nalgene 32 oz Wide Mouth Water Bottle – around $17

5. 🇯🇵 Snow Peak

Snow Peak was founded in 1958 in Sanjo City, Niigata — a region of Japan historically known for metalworking — by Yukio Yamai, who began by making crampons and pitons for Japanese mountaineers. The company’s titanium and stainless camp cookware, stakes, camp furniture, and lanterns are manufactured in Japan. Snow Peak has a lifetime warranty on all products, no registration required.

The titanium line is the most distinctive offering — titanium cookware is lighter than aluminum, more durable than stainless, and doesn’t affect the taste of food or drink. Snow Peak’s Single Wall Titanium mugs and cooksets are the standard against which most Japanese camp cookware is measured.

Snow Peak apparel is manufactured in various countries — check individual product labels. The hardware and cookware lines are the Japan-made core of the brand.

Snow Peak is the premier product for backpackers who prioritize weight, durability, and build quality, and are willing to pay for it.

*Recommended: Snow Peak Japanese Titanium 450 Mug – around $33

Maglite Flashlight made in USA

6. 🇺🇸 MagLite

MagLite has made flashlights in Ontario, California since 1979. The company is privately held and has resisted moving production offshore despite significant price pressure from imported alternatives. Their flashlights — from the Mini Maglite to the full-size D-cell models — are made at the Ontario facility.

MagLite also makes a line of LED conversion kits for older incandescent models, also domestic. The brand’s well-known presence in law enforcement, military, and emergency services is the result of a manufacturing standard that has remained consistent for over 40 years.

*Recommended: MagLite 2-Cell D Incandescent Flashlight – around $25

Broil King Gas Grill

7. 🇨🇦 Broil King

Broil King gas grills are manufactured entirely in North America — at plants in Huntington, Indiana, Dickson, Tennessee, and Waterloo, Ontario. The company is owned by Onward Manufacturing, a Canadian family-owned business that has been making grills since 1986. Unlike Weber and Napoleon, Broil King does not operate a Chinese manufacturing line — all gas grills in the current lineup qualify. The Baron and Imperial series are built in Indiana; the Signet and Sovereign lines come out of Ontario.

Broil King is the most straightforward option on this list for buyers who want to skip the label-checking entirely. Every current gas grill model ships from a North American plant. The Baron 420 is a practical entry point — four burners, cast iron grates, and North American steel — and the cookbox carries a limited lifetime warranty. Available at Acme Tools, Home Depot, Amazon, and independent dealers.

*Recommended: Broil King Baron 420 – around $900

Napoleon Prestige Gas Grill

8. 🇨🇦 Napoleon (Prestige line only)

Napoleon is a Canadian company founded in Barrie, Ontario in 1976. Their Prestige and Prestige Pro series gas grills are manufactured at Napoleon’s facilities in Barrie and Oro-Medonte, Ontario, using Canadian steel. The company publishes a “Made in Canada” filter on their website that lists qualifying models by series. Napoleon’s lower-end lines — including models sold through Canadian Tire — are manufactured in Guangzhou, China, at facilities Napoleon owns.

If you are buying Napoleon to avoid Chinese manufacturing, you must buy from the Prestige series and confirm the label. The entry-level Napoleon models sold at mass-market retailers are Chinese-made and are not listed here. The Prestige Pro 500 is a representative Canadian-made model; the Rogue series is not. Napoleon is transparent about this split and their website makes it navigable — but the burden is on the buyer to check before purchasing.

*Recommended: Napoleon Prestige PRO 500 Propane Gas Grill – around $3,850

How to Verify Origin Before You Buy

Country of origin is legally required on imported goods. For outdoor gear:

Coolers — check the product page directly on the manufacturer’s website. Pelican marks USA-made products explicitly. ORCA states clearly that all hard-sided coolers are domestic. When in doubt, the physical label on the cooler bottom controls.

Water bottles — Nalgene marks their bottles with Made in USA. Yeti Rambler and Stanley drinkware are made in China. The label on the bottom of the bottle is the controlling document.

Camp cookware — Snow Peak products made in Japan will say so on the packaging. Their retail website specifies country of origin by product line.

What to skip — most major tent brands (REI, MSR, Big Agnes) manufacture in Asia. Sleeping bags across most price points are made in China or Vietnam. These categories have very few verified non-China domestic options at accessible prices.
