Ceiling Fans Not Made in China
Nearly every ceiling fan sold in the United States is built in China, including the brands most people grew up with. Hunter, which has been making ceiling fans since 1886, now builds them there too. The list of ceiling fans not made in China is short, and most of it comes from one place: Taiwan.
Only one company on this page builds residential ceiling fans in the United States. The rest are built in Taiwan and Brazil, which still meets this site's standard: where the fan is built, not where the company is headquartered. Some brands below also sell other models built elsewhere, so each entry names the specific fans that qualify. For more around the house, see our guides to home goods and major appliances.
We verify current country-of-origin disclosures, manufacturer statements, and independent sourcing information. When production locations change, we update our recommendations.

Best Ceiling Fans Not Made in China
1. 🇹🇼 Maxx Air (Big Air 72)
Manufactured: Taiwan
The Big Air was built for shops and barns, but it fits a big open room just as well. Nine blades on a 72-inch sweep move up to 10,200 cubic feet of air per minute on a 35-watt DC motor, with six speeds and a remote. Maxx Air is a Ventamatic brand, and the same fan is also sold as the Big Air. Maxx Air's own product page lists final assembly in Taiwan for model ICF72UPS.
Best for: garages, workshops, and large open floor plans

2. 🇹🇼 Modern Fan Co.
Manufactured: Taiwan
Designer Ron Rezek's fans don't look like anything at a home center. The Ball fan sets its blades around a polished sphere, and the Altus has a slim, angular body. Both are built in Taiwan, in hand-brushed aluminum with a clear lacquer finish, and both come in 42- and 52-inch sizes, with or without an LED light. Dealer listings consistently give Taiwan as the country of origin across finishes and sizes.
These are sold through lighting dealers rather than Amazon, and prices run from roughly $475 to over $1,100 depending on size, finish, and controls.
Best for: modern interiors where the fan is part of the design
Recommended: Modern Fan Co. Ball 52-inch Ceiling Fan
3. 🇺🇸 Big Ass Fans (Haiku)
Manufactured: Lexington, Kentucky (Haiku, i6); Malaysia (Haiku L)
Big Ass Fans started in 1999 selling 24-foot fans to dairy barns, and the Haiku was its first fan for the home. It is the one residential ceiling fan on this page built in the United States. The full Haiku and the industrial-style i6 are made in Lexington, where each set of blades is hand-balanced and the finished fan is sound-tested before it ships.
The lower-priced Haiku L is made in Malaysia, not Kentucky. It still meets this page's standard, but if American manufacture is the point, buy the full Haiku. Every Haiku runs on a DC motor and works with an app, a remote, Alexa, or Google Assistant.
Best for: a quiet smart fan, and the only US-built option here

4. 🇧🇷 Matthews-Gerbar
Manufactured: Brazil (assembled and tested in the USA)
Most ceiling fans spin one set of blades in place. The Vent-Bettina hangs small fan heads on curved arms, and the whole assembly turns slowly on its axis, so the breeze moves around the room instead of pushing straight down. You control how fast it turns by tilting the heads: the steeper the angle, the quicker the rotation.
Matthews-Gerbar fans are handmade in Brazil from cast aluminum, spun and stamped steel, and marbleized Bakelite, then assembled and tested in the United States. Dealers list Brazil as the country of origin across the line, from the Vent-Bettina to the Duplo-Dinamico. Each fan is made to order with a lead time of about 10 to 12 weeks, and the Vent-Bettina sells for around $2,700 in brushed nickel. Matthews' lower-priced America fan, built in Taiwan, has been discontinued.
Best for: a showpiece fan with a vintage look
Recommended: Matthews-Gerbar Vent-Bettina Rotational Ceiling Fan
Where Are Hunter Ceiling Fans Made?
Hunter ceiling fans are made in China, including the Hunter Original, the cast-iron model the company has sold for generations. Hunter moved to Memphis in 1946 and built the Original there for decades. Production later went overseas, first to a Hunter plant in Taiwan and now to China. That's three countries under one model name, so a used Original and a new one can carry different labels.
Hunter's industrial division answers "Are Hunter fans made in the USA?" on its own website by saying the company is headquartered in Smyrna, Tennessee. A headquarters is not a factory.
What to Avoid
Hunter. Made in China, including the Hunter Original (see above).
Modern Forms. Lighting dealers list most of the line, including the Axis, Wynd, Lotus, and Morpheus III, as made in China. The Aviator is listed as Taiwan by some dealers and China by others, which means you can't know which one you'll receive.
Craftmade. The company works with more than 40 factories in China, Taiwan, and the United States, and dealers disagree even on single models: one lists the Santori 72 as made in Taiwan, another as made in China.
How to Check Before You Buy
The country of origin is printed on the box and on a label on the fan's motor housing. Dealer and lighting-store listings often show it under "Country of Origin" in the specifications, which is more than most Amazon listings do. For brands that sell the same model from more than one country, check the label when the fan arrives and keep the return window in mind. See how to tell where a product is made for more.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Hunter fans made in the USA?
No. Hunter is headquartered in Memphis, but its ceiling fans are made in China. The company built fans in Memphis for decades before moving production overseas.
Are any ceiling fans made in the USA?
Very few. Big Ass Fans builds its Haiku and i6 residential fans in Lexington, Kentucky. Most other "American" fan brands are American only in their headquarters.
Does a fan made in Taiwan count as made in China?
No. Taiwan is listed as its own country of origin on labels and in customs records, and a fan labeled "Made in Taiwan" was built there.
