Benchmade Knife not made in China

Are Benchmade Knives Made in the USA?

Benchmade knives have been made in the same place where the company has operated since 1996. Every knife — from entry-level everyday carry folders to limited-edition Gold Class collectibles — is assembled in the same 144,000-square-foot facility south of Portland. There is no offshore production. If the butterfly logo is on it, it was made in Oregon.

The Factory

Benchmade was founded in 1979 as Bali-Song in California, went through two name changes and two relocations, and landed in Oregon City with a clear commitment: make everything here. The company briefly sourced some manufacturing overseas in its early years but pulled all production back to Oregon City in 2010, where it has remained.

The facility runs laser cutters, CNC machining, and heat-treating equipment that processes nearly 300,000 pounds of steel into over a million blades a year. After the machines do the precision work, a team of craftspeople hand-assembles each knife and tests it before it ships. Benchmade’s custom knife builder program — which lets buyers specify blade steel, handle material, and color — is also fulfilled from the same facility.

The Steel Question

All Benchmade knives are assembled in Oregon City, but not all use American steel. Where the steel is imported, it comes from Japan or Sweden. Both are known for high-quality blade alloys, and neither is China. Benchmade marks individual product pages with “Made in USA” when domestic steel is used, so it’s easy to check before buying. For this site’s purposes, assembly in Oregon with non-Chinese steel is a clear OK.

The 2019 Controversy

If you’ve searched Benchmade recently, you may have seen references to a 2019 incident where the company helped the Oregon City Police cut up seized firearms required by local policy to be destroyed rather than auctioned. The photos went viral and sparked a boycott. Benchmade subsequently adopted a policy of declining any such requests going forward. It’s worth knowing about, but it has no bearing on where or how the knives are made.

What They Make

Benchmade organizes its catalog into three classes:

Blue Class (Recreation) — everyday carry folding knives, outdoor and hiking blades, and kitchen cutlery. The Bugout and Griptilian are the flagship models in this tier and among the most popular American-made production folders on the market.

Black Class (Professional) — tactical and duty knives designed for military, law enforcement, and emergency services. Many models in this class are restricted to verified professionals.

Gold Class (Collector) — limited-edition knives with premium materials and custom-grade fit and finish. These are the highest-priced items in the catalog and are made in smaller runs.

LifeSharp Service

Every Benchmade knife is covered by their LifeSharp service, which provides free sharpening, cleaning, and adjustment for the life of the knife. Send it back to Oregon City and they return it tuned. Combined with the limited lifetime warranty against defects, this is a meaningful long-term ownership benefit that domestic manufacturing makes practical. No container ships involved.
