A Lot of Their Products Are

Patagonia Women's Coat

Approximately 25-30% of Patagonia’s production runs through Chinese factories. The majority — roughly 45-50% — is manufactured in Vietnam. The remainder is distributed across Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, Mexico, Portugal, Colombia, and about a dozen other countries. Less than 4% is made in the United States.

Patagonia is headquartered in Ventura, California and was founded in 1973. It is genuinely one of the more transparent apparel brands on the question of manufacturing origin — their product pages list the country of manufacture for every item, which is more than most competitors offer. That transparency makes the answer to this question easy for you to verify but not what many buyers expect.

What Patagonia Says

Patagonia’s own website acknowledges the manufacturing picture directly. They describe using contracted factories in 16 countries and cite environmental and labor standards as the primary criteria for factory selection rather than cost minimization. The company is a member of the Fair Labor Association and publishes a supplier list that includes factory names, locations, and worker counts.

That transparency is genuine and uncommon in the apparel industry. It does not change where the products are made.

Ethical Manufacturing vs Country of Origin

These are two separate questions, and Patagonia’s marketing combines them in ways that may confuse buyers.

Patagonia’s ethical sourcing commitments — recycled materials, Fair Trade certification on some products, environmental standards, labor audits — are real positive efforts and better documented than most outdoor brands. In 2020 they announced they would exit the Xinjiang region over concerns about forced labor, ahead of when many other brands took similar steps.

None of that changes the country of origin. A product can be made in China under strong labor and environmental standards, and it can be made in Vietnam under poor ones. Ethical sourcing and manufacturing location are independent variables. Buyers who want clothing not made in China for supply chain concentration reasons will not find it in most Patagonia products, regardless of the brand’s environmental credentials.

How to Check a Specific Product

Patagonia lists country of manufacture on every product page on their website, under “Specs and Features.” This is the most straightforward verification available for any apparel brand and should be the first stop before ordering.

If you’re in a store, the label inside the garment also states country of origin, as required by US law.

For buyers specifically trying to avoid Chinese manufacturing in outdoor apparel, verifying each Patagonia product individually on their website is the most honest approach — some items are made in Vietnam or Portugal, not China, which may be acceptable depending on your reasons for avoiding Chinese manufacturing specifically.

We verify country-of-origin claims using manufacturer disclosures, product labels, and trade records. If something has changed, email us at webmaster@whybuyfromchina.com
